Firefighters are always firefighters, even after they hang up their turnouts for the last time. The Salt Lake Retired Firefighters Association is a community of retired and active firefighters who served in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area.

  • Our condolences to the family of retired Salt Lake City firefighter and former Salt Lake County and Price, Utah, fire chief David A. Barrett, who passed away on July 30, 2008.
  • The funeral for Tom Iversen, son of retired Salt Lake City Firefighter Monroe Iversen and his wife, Flora, and brother of Salt Lake City Firefighter Leonard Iversen, will be held August 2, 2008, 10:30 AM, at Thanksgiving Point, Hidden Falls Area.   • The deadline has been extended for a short time for the Firefighter Occupational Health Study! If you worked as a full-time firefighter in Utah any time after 1980, the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational & Environmental Health urgently needs you to contact them so they can assess the working conditions and types of health problems Utah firefighters have experienced over the years. WE NEED EVERYONE WHO CAN TO RESPOND! Please call RMCOEH at 801-581-4800 or toll free at 800-444-8683, extension 14800.
    The study is a huge step forward in recognizing the hazards Utah firefighters are exposed to regularly. It will establish a baseline on our health and will be of great value firefighters and our families. By completing this questionnaire we retirees can provide a valuable service to our profession.   • Retirement open house for SLC Firefighters Paul Laver and Norm Anderson on February 28, 2008, at SLC International Airport Station 12 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • HELPS Tax Breaks for Retired Firefighters: HELPS is a new retiree health care benefit that provides a tax-free distribution of up to $3,000 from retirement plans to help retirees pay for health insurance or long-term care insurance. More information from the IAFF website.
  • PLEASE Respond to the Firefighter Health Study Questionnaire! Most SLRFA members have received a questionnaire from the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational & Environmental Health to assess the working conditions and types of health problems Utah firefighters have experienced over the years. We need everyone who can to respond. Many retirees from departments other than SLC haven't received one. We are informed that you can call RMCOEH at 801-581-4800 or toll free at 800-444-8683, extension 14800 and still participate.

  • The SLRFA mid-winter get-together will be Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at the Cowboy Grub Restaurant, 2350-½ South Foothill Drive (rear). Social hour begins at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be at 7:00. We will be ordering from the menu. Please RSVP to Dale Lund or George Sumner. Be sure to mark this on your calendar.
  • Our condolences to the family of retired Salt Lake City Firefighter Avard Rogers, who passed away December 1, 2007. Avard served with the Salt Lake City Fire Department from March, 1939, to July, 1974.

  • Retirement open house for Unified Fire Authority firefighter, Captain Brent Darger: Friday, September 28, 2007, at the UFA Logistics Center, 2651 South 600 West, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Be sure to come out and wish Brent well in his retirement.
  • Our condolences to the family of Beth Sorensen Cochrane, who passed away September 21, 2007. Beth is the wife of retired Salt Lake City firefighter, the late Art Cochrane.
  • Our condolences to the family of former Salt Lake City Firefighter Willie Johnson, who passed away August 31, 2007. Willie served with the Salt Lake City Fire Department from August, 1977, to July, 1978.
  • Arches Reunion. In the 1960s a group of young Salt Lake City firefighters and their families began what would become a tradition that lasted over a decade - camping over the Easter holiday at Devil's Garden Campground in Arches National Monument. Firefighters, friends and families are invited to a reunion Friday, September 21, 2007, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Sugarhouse Park, East Hill Pavilion. Pot luck, BYOB.

  • Our condolences to the family of Joyce Tame Prisbrey Stevens, who passed away August 16, 2007. Joyce served in the SLCFD Fire Prevention Bureau from 1979 to 1996.
  • Our condolences to the family of retired Salt Lake City Firefighter Alma Bohn, who passed away August 9, 2007. Alma served with the Salt Lake City Fire Department from September, 1942, to August, 1968.

  • Our condolences to the family of retired Salt Lake City Firefighter William Russell "Russ" Harp, who passed away in the early morning, July 30, 2007. There will be a memorial celebration of his life at the Memorial House in Memory Grove, Salt Lake City, on Sunday August 5, 2007, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Two retirement open houses for Salt Lake City firefighters will be held on July 11, 2007. An open house will be held in honor of the retirement Jeff Neal on Wednesday morning, July 11, 2007, at Station 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Another open house in the afternoon will honor the retirement of Mike Scherzinger, on July 11, 2007, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Station 13. Be sure to come out and wish these firefighters well in their retirements.
  • Our condolences to retired SLC Firefighter Rueben Gallegos and his wife Sandy on the passing of their daughter, Dena Susan Burgess, on June 29, 2007.
  • Important Firefighter Health Study Questionnaire Coming. Many SLRFA members will soon be receiving a questionnaire from the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational & Environmental Health to assess the working conditions and types of health problems Utah firefighters have experienced over the years. This landmark study was funded by the Utah Legislature to assess whether certain diseases and cancers should be presumed to be related to our occupation and should be covered under Workers Comp.
    The study is a huge step forward in recognizing the hazards Utah firefighters are exposed to regularly. It will establish a baseline on our health and could be of great value to our firefighters in the future. By completing this questionnaire we retirees can provide a valuable service to our profession.

  • Special retiree meetings for PEHP. There will be two meetings during PEHP open enrollment that are scheduled expecially for the SLC retirees under 65 and/or spouses who have kept their PEHP insurance. Representatives will be on hand to make sure you get the best value for your insurance dollars. The meetings will be Tuesday, May 22, 2007, 12:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 23, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at the Salt Lake City Council Chambers on the 3rd floor of the City County Building. Bring the list of drugs you are taking.

  • Former Salt Lake City firefighter Kristie Varoz is planning a reunion for the firefighters and their families who made the yearly SLCFD Easter trip to Arches National Park. The reunion would be sometime in September, 2007. If any of you would be interested, please call Kristie's sister Janette at 801-467-6025 as soon as possible.
  • All SLRFA members and guests are encouraged to attend the Salt Lake City Mayoral Candidate Forum, sponsored by Salt Lake City Firefighters Local 1645. Hear what candidates Ralph Becker, Dave Buhler, Keith Christensen, & Jenny Wilson have to say about the issues facing Salt Lake City. The forum will be held Thursday, May 10, 2007, at the Utah Labor Hall, 2261 South Redwood Road, Salt Lake City, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
    You do not need to be a union member to attend.

  • Condolences to the family of Barbara Jean Sadler, who passed away on April 23, 2007. She is the wife of retired Salt Lake County Firefighter Thomas Sadler and the sister of retired Salt Lake County firefighter John Corak.

  • Retired SLC firefighter Jay Russell (Russ) Anderson passed away on January 28, 2007 in Lynnwood, Washington at the age of 85.  Russ is the father of Roy Anderson. He served on the SLCFD from 1946 to 1970.  His obituary will appear in the Salt Lake Tribune on Thursday February 8. There will be a graveside service at Wasatch Lawn on February 10, 2007, 1:30 p.m.

  • Elsie Hansen was featured in a Salt Lake Tribune article on December 24, 2006. Elsie is the wife of retired Salt Lake City firefighter, the late Elmer Hansen (who is perhaps the biggest reason why we have our retired firefighter organization).
